Start your day with early morning coffee and tea before setting off for Sossusvlei, a fascinating landscape of unique ecology and unearthly geography. The route takes you along the Tsauchab dry riverbed, which winds its way through towering sand dunes until it reaches the striking white clay salt pan known as Sossusvlei. In rare years, after a good rainy season that occurs approximately every 7-10 years, the Tsauchab River runs in full flood, filling the Vlei with water. This event transforms the area into a sensational scene teeming with birdlife and vibrant reflections.
As the early morning sun casts its light, the star-shaped dunes display spectacular pastel colors. The first stop on this journey is at Dune 45, one of the most photographed dunes in the world due to its accessibility and picturesque shape. Here, you can climb to the top of the dune for a breathtaking view of the surrounding desert.
Continuing to Sossusvlei, you’ll have the opportunity to climb one of the many towering dunes. The experience of ascending these giant sand mountains is awe-inspiring, offering a panoramic view of the ever-changing and dynamic desert landscape. Breakfast will be served picnic-style under the shade of a camelthorn tree, providing a moment of rest and refreshment amidst the vast expanse of sand.
After breakfast, venture on foot over patches of dunes until you reach the base of Deadvlei, another iconic salt pan. Deadvlei is known for its eerie, photogenic landscape of ancient, dead camelthorn trees, their skeletal forms standing in stark contrast to the white pan floor and red dunes.
The adventure continues with a visit to Sesriem Canyon, a rugged natural gorge carved by the Tsauchab River over millions of years. This narrow canyon is a fascinating geological feature, offering a cool respite from the heat and a chance to explore its depths.
Returning to the lodge for lunch, you can relax and enjoy the midday break. In the afternoon, join a guided nature drive to the “marble mountain,” a geological wonder with stunning views (drinks at own expense). Alternatively, you may choose to relax on your veranda, soaking in the serene atmosphere and watching the sun set over the desert, casting long shadows and a golden glow over the landscape.
This day promises a blend of adventure, stunning natural beauty, and tranquil moments, offering a comprehensive experience of the remarkable Sossusvlei region.
