This itinerary gets off the beaten path” with an opportunity to learn about and interact with some of Ethiopia’s most unique cultural groups.  The itinerary covers many of the tribes in the Omo Valley including the Hamer, Mursi, Karo, Dassenech, Ari, Dorze and the Tsemai.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 : Addis Ababa

Room basis: Bed and Breakfast

You are met on arrival at Addis Airport and transferred to your hotel for your overnight rest.

Day 2 : Lake Langano

Accommodation: Sabana Beach Resort
Room basis: Full Board Plus

This morning after breakfast we fly back to Addis and then drive 200 km south of Addis to the Rift Valley region visiting the chain of Rift Valley Lakes of Ziway, Langano, Abiyata and Shalla. There are opportunities to spot various birds at Lake Ziway, and enjoy swimming at Lake Langano.

Check into our hotel for the evening.

Day 3 : Arba Minch

Accommodation: Paradise Lodge
Room basis: Full Board

This morning after breakfast from Langano to Arba Minch through the fertile land of Wolita and Alaba regions, The Alaba people are known for their beautiful home painting style. Along the way, we pay a visit Sinkile Wildlife Sanctuary, where you will see the endemic Swayne’s hartebeest and other mammals. 

Check into our hotel for the next two nights.

Day 4 : Arba Minch

After breakfast we drive to Chencha to visit a Dorze village.  The Dorze people are known for the weaving tradition and their attractive elephant shaped traditional hut made from bamboo and false banana tree leafs.  Here you will also see the daily activities of the Dorze people....

Day 5 : Jinka

Accommodation: Eco-Omo Safari Lodge

After breakfast we drive south of Arba Minch on a rough road to Jinka, crossing the Weito Valley and visiting the Tsemay village and Woito people that live in the area around the Woito River. We visit Konso village, recently registered as the 9th UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ethiopia. The Konso people are known for their rock terracing and colourful hand woven cotton clothes....

Day 6 : Jinka

Accommodation: Eco-Omo Safari Lodge
Room basis: Full Board

Today enjoy an excursion to the Mago National Park. Continue to drive to a Mursi village to experience the attractive culture of Mursi tribe. They are renowned for the strange custom followed by their women, who on reaching maturity have their lower lips slit and circular disks inserted.

Later drive back to Jinka and visit the Cultural Museum of the People of the Lower Omo Valley.

Day 7 : Turmi

Accommodation: Buska Lodge
Room basis: Full Board

Today drive to Turmi, the settlement of the Hamer people. The women of the Hamer are known for their adorned thick plaits of ochre coloured hair hanging down in a heavy fringe, their leather skirts decorated with cowries and a dozen or more copper bracelets fixed tightly around their arms. The men are known for the initiation ceremony of ‘Jumping over the Bulls’ and witnessing this interesting ritual is entirely a matter of chance.

Day 8 : Turmi

This morning we will head for an excursion to Omo Rate to visit the Dasenech people who are the southernmost people of the country and are known for their scarifications....

Day 9 : Oromia

Accommodation: Yabelo Motel
Room basis: Full Board

A long day as we drive to Yabello with a stop at the villages of the nomadic people of Erbore. Check into our hotel for the evening.

Day 10 : Oromia

We head north today for a visit to the nomadic people of Borena as well as the Sidama tribes who are known for their cultivation of Enset or False Banana.

Day 11 : Depart

Room basis: Bed and Breakfast

Depart this morning we pa a visit to the ‘Fish Market’ at the Shore of Lake Awassa before we drive back to Addis, stopping to visit the chains of the Rift Valley Lakes of Langano, Abiyatta, Shalla, and Ziway. Continue to Addis for some shopping. This evening there is a farewell dinner party at one of the  traditional restaurants of Addis to see the folk dances of the Ethiopian people and taste the variety of Ethiopian food.
