On arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, your guide meets you and transfers you to The Weinberg Hotel in Windhoek for your overnight stay. The drive takes roughly thirty minutes. After a long international flight, this is a quiet place to settle before your Namibian flying adventure begins.

The Weinberg sits in Klein Windhoek, a leafy suburb a short distance from the city centre. It is a boutique property of around forty rooms, built around a heritage building with an interior courtyard. The architecture pairs old-town character with modern comforts, and the scale keeps the atmosphere personal rather than busy.

The hotel forms part of the wider Am Weinberg Estate, which gives you more options than most city hotels of this size. There are three lounge spaces on the property, including the Sky Lounge, which serves tapas and drinks and looks out over the valley. An in-house kitchen draws on a kitchen garden for its seasonal menus, and a delicatessen on the estate stocks local cheeses, cured meats, and fresh pastries if you want something simple. Two further restaurants sit within the estate precinct.

At Eros Airport you meet your pilot for the flight south into the NamibRand Nature Reserve. You land at Geluk airstrip, and a short road transfer brings you to Kwessi Dunes.

Kwessi Dunes sits within the NamibRand, a private reserve of around 200,000 hectares on the eastern edge of the Namib. The country runs from open plains to mountain backdrops and the red dunes the region is known for. Wildlife is desert-adapted, with oryx, springbok, and a good range of birdlife. The reserve is also one of the darkest places in southern Africa, which makes the night skies a feature of the stay in their own right.

The camp has twelve chalets, each built with canvas walls and a thatched roof and cooled with air conditioning for the warmer months. Every chalet has a separate star gazer room, an open-air space where you can sleep out under the sky. The main lodge and pool look across the plains toward the dunes.

Afternoon Scenic Drive
Once you have settled in, your afternoon runs as a guided scenic drive across the reserve. You head out as the light softens, when the dunes take on colour and the plains game is on the move. Your guide works through the ecology of the area as you go, the way oryx and springbok hold out in this kind of country, and where the smaller desert species shelter. You stop for sundowners with the dunes in front of you before returning to camp after dark.

Scenic Drives
Morning and afternoon drives take you across the plains, along the mountain backdrops, and out to the red dunes. These are unhurried, with time to watch the desert-adapted wildlife and the birdlife, and to understand how the system holds together in such an arid setting.

Nature Walks
A guided walk brings the detail into focus. You follow tracks, look at the plants that survive here, and learn the adaptations that let life hold on in this environment. It is a slower, closer counterpart to the drives.

Star Gazing and Skybeds
The NamibRand carries one of the darkest skies on the continent. You can take this in from your own open-air star gazer room, or from the lodge’s skybeds, which give you a comfortable raised platform to watch from. Your guide can point out what is overhead through the seasons.

Quad Biking
For something more active, a guided quad biking outing takes you across the dunes and plains. It covers ground quickly and opens up the wider landscape, with the desert views around you throughout.

Today is a full day out to Sossusvlei, the best known stretch of dunes in the country. You leave early to reach the dunes for first light, when the low sun throws the ridges into relief and the temperatures are still manageable.

You spend the morning among the towering dunes, with the option to climb one of the higher ones for the view over the dune sea. From there you continue to Deadvlei, the white clay pan studded with the blackened skeletons of camel thorn trees, set against the orange sand. It is one of the most photographed scenes in Namibia, and the contrast holds up in person.

You also take in Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge cut by the Tsauchab River, before the day turns back toward camp. You return to Kwessi Dunes in the late afternoon.

You leave Kwessi Dunes after breakfast and transfer to Geluk airstrip for the flight north. The route runs via Doro Nawas in Damaraland, then continues to the Skeleton Coast. You land at the airstrip serving the coast and transfer by road to Shipwreck Lodge.

The Skeleton Coast is where the cold Atlantic meets the Namib. It is one of the more remote stretches of the country, a meeting of fog-bound shoreline, shifting dunes, and wind-worked plains, with very little sign of people. The coast takes its name from the ships and whale bones left along it over the years.

Shipwreck Lodge sits within this setting, north of the Hoanib, in the Skeleton Coast concession. The cabins are built to echo the lines of wrecked hulls, and they read as part of the landscape rather than an intrusion on it.

Each cabin has a wood-burning stove for the cold coastal nights, an en-suite bathroom, and windows facing out across the dunes to the sea. The main areas, a dining room and a lounge, are warm and sheltered, and serve as the place to gather between outings.

Afternoon Sundowner Drive
Once you have arrived and settled in, your afternoon runs as a sundowner drive out to the roaring dunes. You head out as the light drops, when the sand shifts colour and the wind eases. Your guide stops on a high point to set up drinks as the sun goes down over the Atlantic. It is a quiet introduction to the coast before your first night at the lodge.

Today is a full day along the coast to Möwe Bay, which takes in much of what gives this shoreline its history.

The Coast Road and Shipwrecks
You travel north along the coast, stopping at the wrecks that mark the route, among them the Suiderkus and the Karimona. Your guide works through how these ships came to ground here, and how the fog and currents made this such a difficult coast for shipping.

Westies Mine and the Ventura Bomber
The drive also takes in the remains of Westies diamond mine and the wreck of the Ventura bomber, two reminders of the people who tried to work and cross this coast. They give you a sense of how isolated and unforgiving the country is.

Möwe Bay Seal Colony
The seal colony at Möwe Bay is the focus of the day. You spend time watching the colony at close range, with the noise, the movement, and the scale of it standing in contrast to the empty country you have driven through to reach it.

Today keeps you closer to the lodge, with a drive inland and time on the dunes.

4×4 Drive to the Clay Castles
You head out along the Hoarusib River to the Clay Castles, a run of eroded clay formations set back from the coast. The riverbed is one of the more reliable places to find desert-adapted wildlife, so you watch for oryx and springbok along the way, and there is a chance of desert-adapted elephant or even lion moving through the system, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Quad Biking and Sandboarding
Back near camp, the dunes are open for quad biking and sandboarding. Both give you an active way to work the sand and take in the wider coastline. Quad biking is worth booking ahead, as places are limited.

Beach Lunch
Weather permitting, the day can include a picnic lunch set up on the beach. Conditions on this coast are changeable, so this is offered when the fog and wind allow rather than fixed in advance.

You leave the Skeleton Coast by road this morning and drive inland to Hoanib Valley Camp. The route follows the Hoanib River, a dry riverbed that cuts through the desert and acts as a corridor for wildlife. This is a full day on the road, less a transfer than a game drive in its own right.

The Hoanib is one of the more reliable places in the region to find desert-adapted elephant, and you watch for them along the way, along with oryx, springbok, and giraffe moving through the riverine vegetation. Your guide works through the geology of the valley and the way the river system carries life across this arid country.

You stop along the route as conditions allow, and reach Hoanib Valley Camp by late afternoon.

Hoanib Valley Camp sits in Kaokoland, one of the more remote parts of north-western Namibia. The country here is a mix of ancient mountains, gravel plains, and dunes, with desert-adapted wildlife moving through the dry riverine systems and Himba and Herero communities living across the wider region.

The camp is a joint venture between the local Sesfontein community and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, which is the only Africa-wide giraffe conservation organisation. That partnership runs through the whole operation, from the research based here to the way the camp is built and staffed.

There are six tents, five doubles and one family tent, set on the valley floor below the mountains. They are raised on decks built from wood, bamboo, and a recycled-material composite, and the camp runs on solar power, with the aim of leaving little trace on the site. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom and a private veranda looking out across the valley.

The interiors are simple and neutral, furnished with pieces made by local carvers and carpenters, so the look stays in keeping with the country around it. The shared areas include lounges, a library, a dining area, a bar, and a fire pit for sundowners.

Afternoon at Camp
After a full day on the road, your first evening is usually given to settling in and taking the valley in from camp, with drinks at the fire pit as the light goes.

Rhino Tracking on Foot
You head out early with expert trackers to look for desert-adapted black rhino on foot. This is a slow, deliberate way to cover the country, reading sign and moving in on foot, and your trackers work through the conservation effort that keeps these animals in the landscape. Sightings depend on conditions and are never guaranteed, which is part of the nature of tracking.

A Day with the Giraffe Researchers
Later you spend time with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation team, who are based in the area. You see how the giraffe research is carried out and where the camp fits into it, and you learn about the foundation’s work across the continent. You leave Hoanib Valley Camp this morning and transfer to the airstrip for your flight to the Etosha area. On landing you are met and driven to Safarihoek Lodge, your base in the Etosha Heights Private Reserve for the next three nights.

Safarihoek sits in Etosha Heights, a private reserve of around 60,000 hectares that shares a sixty-five kilometre boundary with the south-western side of Etosha National Park. The country is classic Namibian savannah, open grassland and mopane running to the horizon, with acacia and scrub breaking up the plains. Wildlife moves freely across it, from large herds of plains game to both black and white rhino, and you have it largely to yourselves, away from the traffic of the main park.

The lodge stands on top of a hill, with the plains falling away below it. There are eleven thatched chalets, each raised on a wooden deck and angled to take in the view, so you can watch zebra and elephant on the plains from your own veranda. Eight of the chalets have an outdoor shower, and all are air-conditioned for the heat of the day.

The main area sits under thatch and holds the lounge, dining room, a wine cellar, and a small curio shop. A swimming pool runs along the front of the lodge with a 180-degree outlook over the savannah and the waterhole below.

The lodge also has a double-storey photography hide set at a waterhole, built to put you at eye level with whatever comes in to drink.

Afternoon Game Drive
Once you have settled in, your afternoon runs as a game drive across Etosha Heights. You head out as the heat eases, working the plains and waterholes for plains game, giraffe, zebra, and the predators that follow them. Your guide reads the country as you go and stops for sundowners before you return to the lodge after dark.

Game Drives in Etosha Heights
Morning and afternoon drives take you across the reserve in search of its wildlife. Etosha Heights is known for rhino, and you have a good chance of both black and white rhino here, alongside concentrations of plains game, giraffe, zebra, and predators including lion and cheetah. Because the reserve is private, your guide can go off-road and work a sighting in a way that is not possible inside the national park.

The Double-Storey Photography Hide
Time in the photography hide is worth setting aside. Built over two levels at a waterhole, it puts you close to the animals coming in to drink, from elephant and antelope to the birds that work the water’s edge. It suits photographers, but you do not need a camera to get something out of it. Sitting quietly while wildlife comes to you is a different kind of game viewing from the drives.

Night Game Drive
After dark you can head out on a night drive, which the private reserve allows where the national park does not. With a spotlight you look for the nocturnal species that stay out of sight during the day, which adds another side to the wildlife you have been seeing on the daytime drives. It can be cold once the sun is down, so you go out wrapped up.

Morning Drive and Tracking

A morning drive gives you another run at the reserve, with the option to focus on tracking rhino on foot or from the vehicle with your guide, depending on conditions and what has been moving in the area. Mornings are the most active time, so this is when the predators and the larger herds tend to be on show.

Bush Walk
A guided walk on the reserve slows the pace and brings the detail of the bush into focus, the tracks, the plants, and the smaller species you pass over from a vehicle. Your guide carries the wider picture of how the reserve fits against Etosha and the conservation work that underpins it, including the lion and cheetah research the reserve supports.

Sundowners and the Hide
Your last full day leaves room to return to the photography hide or to take a final set of sundowners out on the plains as the light goes. After three days you will have a feel for the rhythm of the place, and the closing evening is a good one to spend watching the waterhole rather than chasing distance.

If your flight time allows, you head out on a final morning game drive across Etosha Heights. The early hours are the most active, so this is a good chance to catch the plains game and predators on the move one last time, and to look again for rhino before you leave the reserve.

You return to the lodge for breakfast and to finish packing. From there you transfer to the airstrip for your flight back to Windhoek, where you connect with your onward international flight home.
