Day 1: Nairobi

On arrival you are met and transfer to the 5 Star Boma Hotel for your overnight rest.

Day 2: Masai Mara

Depart Nairobi after breakfast and drive to the Masai Mara National Reserve offering wonderful scenery and plenty of game. It is perhaps the only region left in Kenya where the visitor may see animals in the same super-abundance as existed a century ago. Settle in to the Entim Mara Camp for the next four nights that offers twelve luxury tents close to the Mara River. Entim was designed with a purpose in mind; to be in the best possible location to view the wildebeest migration. For a few months of the year the migration is on our doorstep on the Mara river. We are hear to experience the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ and after lunch enjoy your first game drive in the Mara with a focus on perhaps seeing our first wildebeest crossing at the Mara River.

Please note some departures may stay at Ilkeliani Camp on the Talek River.

Day 3: Masai Mara

Our focus today will be on the migration experience. Entim Camp is set right on the river and it is not uncommon to catch a glimpse of a crossing right from the camp. We will spend the day on game drives in the Mara ecosystem with a special focus on locating the best spots to witness the crossings.

Please note some departures may stay at Ilkeliani Camp on the Talek River.

Day 4: Masai Mara

Spend the day on safari in the Masai Mara with morning and afternoon game drives with a special emphasis on the migration experience. The plains around the camp are filled with an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, from plains game to large herds of elephant and buffalo – and, of course, predators. You may wish to book an optional Mara Balloon Safari (cost extra).

Please note some departures may stay at Ilkeliani Camp on the Talek River.

Day 5: Masai Mara

Our last day in the Mara Reserve will be spent on game drives again locating the best spots for the migration experience. Patience is required as these tricky beasts can be playful about when they will spill across the river. You may wish to book an optional Mara Balloon Safari (cost extra).

Please note some departures may stay at Ilkeliani Camp on the Talek River.

Day 6 - 9: Mara-Naboisho Conservancy

This morning enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we check out of the camp. Continue with a game drive en route to the Mara-Naboisho Conservancy and Encounter Mara for the next four nights. Your migration guide will leave you in the hands of the specialty conservancy guides. The camp itself is tucked away in a stunning valley and offers extremely comfortable classic safari accommodation with views from each of the twelve guest tents.

Guests at Encounter Mara will often find themselves the only vehicle in sight, surrounded by a pride of lions. The busy nature of the national reserve will be in stark contrast to the natural rhythm of the camp’s activities. Well-trained guides will passionately reveal a world of wonder to their guests, taking the time to enjoy and explain the more subtle aspects of the bush, as well as ensuring unrivalled encounters with Africa’s revered big game species. The valley in which the camp is located is well-known as being the territory of a pride of 22 lions, several resident leopards and a wide variety of plains game, including large herds of elephant and giraffe. The open savannah found on either side of the valley also provides frequent cheetah sightings, as they hunt the bountiful herds of gazelle. The conservancy receives impressive numbers of wildebeest during the annual migration, and between June and October guests will be astounded by these herds as they flood into the conservancy by their tens of thousands from the Northern Loita plains and Southern Serengeti herds.

Activities at Encounter Mara

Unlike the vast majority of lodges in the Masai Mara, the camp’s location in a private conservancy will allow for sought-after activities such as night game drives and game walks. Night drives will be conducted after enjoying a breathtaking Mara sunset from one of the many sundowner spots. This is the time when most tourists in the Masai Mara National Reserve are rushing back to their accommodations. For Encounter Mara’s guests however, as the light fades and the night’s first stars appear, a spotlight will be used to enjoy the nocturnal action as the group makes its way back to camp. This is often one of the most exciting times in the bush as the big cats start to hunt, and lion, leopard, aardwolf, porcupine, grazing hippos and many other nocturnal species are regularly spotted. Game walks on the wildlife-studded, open plains with our Maasai guides will be another memorable activity, unique to conservancy areas. Avoiding areas with thick bush where dangerous animals could be startled, designated sections of the conservancy will allow guests to literally walk amongst the plentiful herds of giraffe, zebra, gazelle and other plains game. These walks will provide the perfect opportunity for our guides to point out some of the more subtle aspects of the environment, such as plants, insects and animal tracks. Other novel activities will also be on offer, such as “guided” stargazing after dinner. The camp’s open safari vehicles are designed to suit photographic groups. Maasai blankets folded on each seat will provide the perfect companion to game drives during the cooler hours and guides will always pack a good supply of ice-cold drinks and snacks to have on hand – always being sensitive to individual tastes of guests.
