Kasanka Bat Safari
Each year as October draws to a close, the skies above Kasanka National Park come alive with one of nature’s greatest spectacles. Thousands upon thousands of straw-coloured fruit bats descend upon the Mushitu swamp forest near the confluence of the Musola and Kasanka rivers, drawn by the ripening fruit of wild loquat and waterberry trees. Over the following weeks their numbers swell into the millions, creating vast, swirling clouds that darken the horizon at dusk. While smaller migrations occur elsewhere in Africa—often near urban centres where growing cities threaten their survival—Kasanka remains one of the last pristine strongholds for this awe-inspiring phenomenon. To witness the bats rise in unison against the glow of the setting sun is to experience one of the continent’s most astonishing natural events, a fleeting and unforgettable celebration of life on a grand scale.
