Our serene base at Guma Lagoon, set on the edge of one of the Okavango Delta’s largest lagoons, offers the perfect blend of comfort and wilderness. From here, we set out to explore this breathtaking ecosystem by traditional mokoro—dugout canoes that glide silently through the narrow, reed-fringed channels. Guided by expert local polers who know every curve of the Delta, we’ll venture to remote, uninhabited islands for guided walks, learning about the intricate balance of this unique environment and the remarkable adaptations of its wildlife and plant life.

After breakfast, we take to the skies on a scenic flight over the breathtaking Okavango Delta and Moremi National Park. From above, the labyrinth of winding channels, lagoons, and floodplains stretches endlessly beneath you—a dazzling mosaic of life and movement. The flight continues toward the Khwai airstrip, where your safari adventure deepens into one of Botswana’s most celebrated wildlife regions. Upon landing, the Drifters ground crew greets you and transfers you in an open 4×4 vehicle to our remote tented camp on the banks of the Mbudi River. The drive offers your first glimpse of the area’s prolific wildlife, and the camp itself promises a peaceful retreat, nestled beneath ancient trees. After settling into your comfortable tented unit, enjoy a relaxing evening beside the fire, with the sounds of the bush filling the night air.

Guided by experienced local trackers, we follow animal trails through woodlands and open plains, stopping at waterholes where wildlife gathers to drink. Returning to camp for lunch and a bit of relaxation, you can cool off in the shade or watch elephants from the riverbank. Later in the afternoon, we set off again, capturing the golden hues of sunset as the bush transforms with nocturnal activity. Evenings are spent around the campfire, sharing stories under a sky thick with stars.

Today’s game drives may lead us deeper into the Reserve, where the Okavango Delta meets the dry savannah. Later, we return to the peaceful surroundings of our lodge, set along the Thamalakane River, where comfort and calm await. As evening falls, enjoy a hearty dinner and the warm hospitality of the lodge before settling in for a well-earned night’s rest, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of nature.

After the excitement and early starts of the past few days, today begins at a gentler pace. Enjoy a relaxed morning by the riverbank, unwind beside the pool, or stretch your legs with a walk to nearby Chanoga Village. Hidden from the tourist trail, Chanoga offers an authentic glimpse into everyday life in rural Botswana. Guided by a local villager, visit a traditional homestead and experience a way of life that remains refreshingly simple and deeply connected to the rhythms of nature. It’s a meaningful encounter that brings you closer to the true spirit of Africa.

After an early lunch, we head eastward toward the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans—one of the most striking and surreal landscapes on the continent. Here, endless horizons stretch across a shimmering, silvery-white expanse that once formed part of a great ancient lake. In the dry season, the pans appear barren and silent, while after the rains they transform into lush grasslands alive with migrating wildebeest, zebra, and flamingos. The colours, light, and stillness of this landscape leave a lasting impression.

As the afternoon light softens, we continue to our next overnight stop at Elephant Sands. This remarkable lodge is famous for its waterhole, where wild elephants often gather just metres away. Relax by the fire and enjoy dinner as these gentle giants drink and bathe under the African stars—a truly unforgettable close to the day.

Today we continue our journey north toward Chobe National Park, one of Botswana’s most celebrated wildlife destinations and home to the largest concentration of elephants in Africa—over 50,000 of them roam freely across its floodplains, forests, and riverbanks. The park’s defining feature, the Chobe River, provides a lifeline for countless species, and it’s here that we experience one of Africa’s most memorable safaris—from the water.

Boarding a boat for an afternoon river cruise, we glide silently along the Chobe River, where the shift in perspective transforms every encounter. From this low vantage point, elephants appear even more majestic as they wade into the shallows to bathe, while pods of hippos grunt lazily among the lilies. Crocodiles bask on the banks before slipping silently beneath the surface, and herds of kudu, impala, and buffalo come down to drink, unbothered by our quiet presence.
