The centrepiece is Lucy — known locally as Dinknesh, meaning “wonderful” — a 3.2-million-year-old hominid fossil discovered in the Afar region in 1974 and among the most complete early human remains ever found. Sitting at an elevation of roughly 2,500 metres in the Lasta highlands, the Maribela is widely considered the best accommodation in Lalibela. It is a comfortable, well-run three-star property with warm hospitality, reliable amenities, and views that set the tone for what lies ahead. Take a moment to settle in before the afternoon begins.

Lalibela is one of the most significant religious and historical sites in Africa and in the broader Christian world. The town sits in the Lasta region of northern Ethiopia, where eleven rock-hewn churches of extraordinary craftsmanship are found within a single compact area. Carved directly from the volcanic rock during the reign of King Lalibela in the 12th and 13th centuries, when the town was known as Roha and served as the capital of the Zagwe dynasty, they are regularly described as the eighth wonder of the world. Legend holds that King Lalibela, having spent time in Jerusalem, returned to Ethiopia with the intention of building a New Jerusalem on home soil. How exactly the churches were constructed remains debated — theories range from an enormous organised labour force to, depending on who is telling the story, angels and the Knights Templar.

Your first afternoon is spent with the northwestern group of churches, which collectively represent the earthly Jerusalem. The visit begins with Bete Medhane Alem, the Church of the Saviour of the World. Standing approximately 11 metres tall and supported by 72 pillars, it is the largest monolithic rock-hewn church in the world — an extraordinary opening to the complex. The group also includes Bete Maryam, Bete Denagel, Bete Meskal, and Debre Sina. The afternoon concludes at Bete Golgotha, which houses some of the finest early Christian relief carvings in Ethiopia, a form of sacred art rarely encountered elsewhere in the country.

The morning takes you through Bete Gabriel and Raphael, Bete Merquorios, and Bete Emmanuel before concluding at Bete Abba Libanos, each one a testament to the sustained ambition and skill of the Zagwe craftsmen who carved them from living rock centuries ago.

The visit ends at Bete Giorgis, the Church of Saint George, and for many visitors it proves the most memorable of all eleven churches. Carved in the form of a perfect Greek cross and descending some 15 metres into the earth, it stands apart from the rest of the complex both in its geometry and its condition. After breakfast at the Maribela Hotel, you depart at 9am and transfer to Lalibela airport for your flight west to Gondar. On arrival your guide will meet you and transfer you to the Goha Hotel for check-in.

The Goha sits on a hillside overlooking Gondar and is widely regarded as the best-positioned hotel in the city. Its elevated setting provides sweeping views across the rooftops and surrounding highlands, and the property offers comfortable rooms, attentive service, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it a genuine pleasure to return to each evening. After settling in, head out to a local restaurant for lunch before the afternoon’s exploration begins.

Gondar served as the capital of Ethiopia from the 17th to the 19th century and the city’s legacy from that era is immediately visible. Your first stop is the Royal Enclosure, a UNESCO World Heritage Site enclosed within a 90-metre wall and containing a remarkable concentration of imperial architecture. The oldest and most commanding structure within the compound is the two-storey palace of Emperor Fasiladas, constructed from solid basalt in the 1640s and still largely intact. Surrounding it are the library of Emperor Yohannes I, the House of Song where royal ceremonies were held, the elegant banquet hall of Emperor Bakaffa, and the palace of the queen. Each structure reflects the distinct ambitions of the emperor who built it, and taken together they offer a vivid portrait of Ethiopian imperial life across more than two centuries.

From the enclosure you visit the Bath of Fasiladas, a large stone pool and pavilion used today during the annual Timkat festival, Ethiopia’s celebration of Epiphany, when it is filled with water and blessed by priests in a ceremony that draws pilgrims from across the country. The day concludes at the Church of Debre Birhan Selassie, one of the most celebrated churches in Ethiopia, known above all for its remarkable painted ceiling depicting rows of watchful angels — an image that has become one of the defining icons of Ethiopian Orthodox art.

You return to the Goha Hotel for dinner and your first overnight in Gondar.

After breakfast at the Goha Hotel, you depart for a full-day excursion into the Simien Mountains National Park, passing through rural villages and crossing high mountain passes with sweeping views at every turn.

The Simien Mountains are among the most dramatic landscapes in Africa. The national park covers 180 square kilometres and spans an elevation range of roughly 1,900 to 4,430 metres, creating a striking variety of terrain and vegetation across its breadth. The higher reaches transition into afro-alpine meadow, where the flora is sparse but distinctive — endemic species such as the giant lobelia, everlasting Helichrysum flowers, and the vivid red-flowered Kniphofia foliosa grow in conditions found almost nowhere else on the continent. The day is spent following century-old footpaths through a landscape of eroded pinnacles, deep valleys, and sheer escarpments that drop away to the lowlands far below. The routes offer some of the finest high-altitude walking in East Africa, and the scale of the scenery — particularly along the cliff edges — is genuinely arresting. Keep a close eye on the surrounding grasslands for Gelada baboons, a species found only in the Ethiopian highlands. After breakfast at the Goha Hotel, you depart Gondar for the drive south to Bahir Dar, approximately 180 kilometres and three hours through the Ethiopian highlands. The road offers fine views of the surrounding countryside and passes through small towns and rural villages that give a genuine sense of life in this part of the country.

On arrival in Bahir Dar, you board a private boat and head out onto Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile. The lake is home to a number of ancient island and peninsula monasteries, and the boat journey itself is a pleasure — watch for a variety of waterbirds along the shoreline and the traditional papyrus tankwa boats still used by local fishermen crossing the open water.

Your destination is the Zege Peninsula, reached after a short hike through local villages and coffee farms that have been cultivated here for generations. The first monastery you visit is Ura Kidane Meret, one of the most important in the region. Founded in the 16th century, it houses a remarkable collection of ceremonial crosses and crowns, and its circular painted interior — the maqdas — is covered in vivid, well-preserved murals depicting Ethiopian saints and biblical scenes in a style entirely distinct from anything you will have seen elsewhere on the journey. The second stop is Azwa Maryam, a smaller and more intimate site set among peaceful gardens, offering a quieter contrast to the grandeur of Ura Kidane Meret.

After breakfast at the Ellily International Hotel, you transfer to the airport for your flight south to Jinka, the gateway to the Lower Omo Valley. On arrival your driver will meet you and head directly to a Mursi village before continuing on to your lodge for the night.

The Mursi are one of the most distinctive communities in the Omo Valley and their culture is unlike anything encountered elsewhere in Ethiopia. The women are known for the practice of lip plates — on reaching maturity, the lower lip is slit and clay discs of increasing size are inserted over time. The size of the plate carries social significance, traditionally linked to a woman’s value at the time of marriage, though the plates are worn only occasionally given their considerable weight. One widely cited origin of the custom holds that the discs were adopted to deter slave traders. The men paint their bodies and faces with white pigment and observe their own rites of passage, including the Donga stick fighting ceremony in which two opponents battle with long staves — a young man must prove himself in combat before he is considered eligible for marriage. It is a community that has maintained its traditions with remarkable continuity and a visit here offers a genuinely rare window into a way of life largely unchanged for centuries.

From the Mursi village you drive southwest, approximately 126 kilometres and three hours, to Turmi, passing through Bena villages along the route. The Bena are a smaller ethnic group of the valley and the roadside stops offer an unhurried look at daily life in this remote and visually striking landscape.

On arrival in Turmi you check in to Buska Lodge, your base for the next three nights. Buska is a well-regarded and comfortable lodge set in the heart of Turmi, widely considered one of the best options in the Lower Omo Valley. Coffee originated in Ethiopia and the ceremony — roasting the green beans, grinding them by hand, and brewing in a clay jebena pot — is a ritual of hospitality that has been central to Ethiopian social life for centuries. It is a fitting close to your first day in the valley.

After breakfast at Buska Lodge, you set out for Murulle, a village on the banks of the Omo River and home to the Karo people. The Karo are one of the smallest ethnic groups in the entire valley, with a population estimated at no more than a few thousand, and their survival as a distinct community makes a visit here feel all the more meaningful.

The Karo are celebrated above all for their body and face painting, practiced with particular care before ceremonies and important gatherings. The process is elaborate and considered — designs are applied using chalk white, charcoal black, yellow, ochre, and red earth pigments, worked with the fingertips and palms into patterns that range from fine detailed linework to bold, sweeping compositions across the chest and face. The effect is striking and the craft behind it is genuine, each design carrying its own symbolic meaning within the community. It is among the most visually compelling artistic traditions in the Omo Valley.

The afternoon takes you to the weekly market at Dimeka or Alduba, one of the most vibrant gatherings in the region. Bena and Hamer people come together here to trade livestock, grain, and goods, and the market has a lively, unhurried energy that offers excellent opportunities to observe and interact across communities. There is a reasonable chance of encountering a Hamer bull jumping ceremony in the area — a pivotal rite of passage in which a young man must successfully run across the backs of a line of cattle to prove his readiness for marriage. If the timing aligns, it is one of the most memorable experiences the Omo Valley has to offer.

You return to Buska Lodge for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast at Buska Lodge, you drive south to Omo Rate to visit the Dasenech, the southernmost people of Ethiopia. Living along the banks of the Omo River close to the Kenyan border, the Dasenech are a pastoralist community whose territory straddles three countries. They are known for the practice of scarification, in which elaborate patterns of raised scar tissue are created on the body as markers of identity, status, and rites of passage. A short boat crossing brings you into their village, and the welcome is typically relaxed and open, giving you time to observe daily life at close range.

From Omo Rate you drive north toward Arba Minch, stopping along the way at the weekly Key Afer market. This is one of the more diverse gatherings in the southern highlands, drawing Ari, Bena, and Tsemai people from the surrounding villages to trade cattle, grain, spices, and handcrafted goods. The market has an authentic, working energy to it — this is commerce and community, not a visitor attraction — and the mix of ethnic groups in one place makes it a rewarding stop for anyone with an interest in the cultural complexity of this part of Ethiopia.

The afternoon is spent with the Hamer, one of the best known and most visually striking communities in the Omo Valley. Hamer women are immediately recognisable by their elaborately styled ochre-coloured hair, worn in thick plaits with a heavy fringe, their leather skirts decorated with cowrie shells, and the copper bracelets worn in tight stacks along their forearms. The overall effect is one of considered adornment that carries deep cultural meaning. The men of the Hamer are known for the bull jumping ceremony, the central initiation rite in which a young man must run across the backs of a line of cattle without falling — success marks his passage into adulthood and eligibility for marriage. Witnessing the ceremony depends entirely on timing, but the chance of an encounter is reasonable in this area and your guide will have advance knowledge of any ceremonies planned nearby.

You return to Buska Lodge for your final dinner and overnight in Turmi.

After breakfast at Buska Lodge, you begin a long and rewarding drive north, covering approximately 285 kilometres through the landscapes of the southern Omo region. Your first stop is the Key Afer weekly market, where Bena, Ari, and Tsemai people gather to trade livestock, grain, and goods. It is a lively and authentic gathering that offers a final look at the cultural diversity of this remarkable part of Ethiopia before the journey continues.

From Key Afer you drive to Konso, a community whose relationship with the land around them is one of the most impressive examples of traditional agriculture anywhere in Africa. Working with stone-terraced hillsides carefully constructed and maintained across generations, the Konso have managed to extract a productive living from terrain that would defeat most farming communities. The villages themselves are walled and compact, with winding paths connecting the various quarters, and there is a beauty and order to them that reflects the discipline and cohesion of Konso society. If time allows, a visit to the compound of Chief Kala Gezahegan is well worth the short walk. Should he be in residence, an audience with the chief is a genuine privilege — he is a warm and thoughtful man with a deep commitment to his community and its traditions. Behind the palace, the carved wooden waka figures commemorating his father and grandfather stand as silent markers of Konso ancestral memory, a funerary tradition unique to this culture.

After lunch in Konso you continue to Arba Minch for an afternoon boat trip on Lake Chamo, the southernmost Rift Valley lake in Ethiopia. Lake Chamo is one of the finest wildlife boat experiences in the country. The lake is home to large pods of hippo and an extraordinary concentration of Nile crocodiles gathered along the shoreline in numbers that have earned the area the local name of Crocodile Market. African fish eagles, great white pelicans, egrets, and a wide variety of lowland waterbirds inhabit the shallows and surrounding vegetation, and local fishermen working the lake from traditional wooden boats add a further layer of life to the scene. It is an unhurried and visually spectacular way to close out the afternoon.

From Arba Minch you continue driving to Jinka and check in to Jinka Resort for dinner and overnight. Your first stop is the Dorze village at Chencha, situated in the cool highlands above Arba Minch at around 2,500 metres. The Dorze are renowned throughout Ethiopia for the quality of their cotton weaving, a craft so central to their identity that the Dorze name has become synonymous with the finest woven cotton cloth in the country. The work is divided along clear lines — men weave on traditional looms while women spin the thread — and the results can be seen everywhere in the village, from the clothing worn by residents to the intricately patterned fabrics sold in the small workshops. The village itself is immediately distinctive, its towering beehive-shaped bamboo houses rising several metres above the ground, each one surrounded by a small garden of spices, cabbage, and tobacco. Your visit includes a stop at a local household where a woman demonstrates the preparation of kocho, the staple food of the Dorze made from the pulp of the false banana plant. It is a time-consuming and skillful process and the demonstration gives a genuine sense of the daily domestic life that sustains this community.

From Chencha you continue north, stopping en route at an Alaba village. The Alaba are a distinct ethnic and linguistic community of the southern highlands and a brief stop here adds another dimension to the cultural breadth of the day before the road flattens out toward the Rift Valley floor.

It is a lively and colourful scene — local fishermen bring in their catch as marabou storks and pelicans jostle for position along the water’s edge, and the whole spectacle has an energy that is best experienced before the heat of the day sets in. It is an honest and unscripted introduction to life on the lake and a fine way to begin your final day on the road.

From Hawassa you drive north through the Rift Valley, following a route that passes three of Ethiopia’s most scenic lakes. Lake Langano, with its distinctive rust-coloured waters, offers a brief stop and fine views across to the Arsi Mountains. Lake Ziway is one of the largest in the Ethiopian Rift and a productive fishing lake dotted with traditional boats. The Abyata-Shalla Lakes National Park, comprising two lakes of dramatically contrasting character, is known for its large flamingo populations and the stark volcanic landscape that surrounds Lake Shalla’s deep, steaming waters. The drive through this corridor is one of the most scenically rewarding in the country and the succession of lakes gives a clear sense of the geological forces that have shaped the Rift Valley over millions of years.

On arrival in Addis Ababa your first stop is Merkato, the largest open-air market in Africa. Covering an enormous area of the city’s western districts, Merkato is organized loosely by trade — spices, textiles, metalwork, pottery, coffee, and goods from every corner of the country find their way here. It is busy, loud, and occasionally overwhelming, but navigating it with a local guide reveals a commercial tradition that has been central to Addis Ababa’s identity since the city’s earliest days. It is an excellent final opportunity to find something to bring home.

From Merkato you make your way to Tomoca Coffee, one of the oldest and most respected roasters in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and Tomoca has been roasting and brewing here since 1953. Watching the green beans roasted to order and drinking the result is a pleasure in itself, and a bag of freshly roasted coffee to take home is among the most fitting souvenirs the country has to offer.

The evening ends with a farewell dinner at one of Addis Ababa’s traditional restaurants, where a spread of Ethiopian dishes — injera, various wots, and the full range of flavours you will have encountered across the journey — is accompanied by traditional music and dance from the country’s many ethnic groups. It is a warm and fitting conclusion to the trip.
