Few countries on earth carry the weight of history that Ethiopia does. This is the land where humanity’s earliest ancestors walked, where a Christian civilisation flourished in isolation for more than a thousand years, and where some of the most enduring monuments to human ambition and faith anywhere in Africa still stand in daily use. This journey moves through the full depth of that northern story. The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, carved from solid volcanic rock during the 12th and 13th centuries, represent a feat of engineering and devotion that has few equals anywhere in the world. The imperial compounds of Gondar speak to a medieval civilisation of genuine sophistication, its palaces and cathedrals built at a time when much of the world was still finding its footing. The Simien Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offer some of the most dramatic highland scenery on the continent — deep escarpments, afro-alpine meadows, and endemic wildlife found nowhere else on earth. Addis Ababa bookends the journey, providing an introduction to Ethiopian history through its museums and markets, and a final evening that brings the country’s food, music, and cultural diversity together in one place. Ethiopia does not give itself up easily, and that is precisely its appeal. What you take home from this trip is not a collection of sights but a genuine encounter with one of the world’s last great undiscovered travel destinations.
