Grand Tribal Expedition

Ethiopia is composed of about 83 ethnic groups with 200 dialects.  This itinerary covers all the tribes that are to the east and West part of the Omo River, like Suram, Mursi, Hamer, Karo, Dasenech, Konso, Agnuak, Nuer, Ari, Benna and Dorze, etc.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 : Addis Ababa

Room basis: Bed and Breakfast

You are met on arrival at Addis Airport and transferred to your hotel for your overnight rest.

Day 2 : Gambela National Park

Accommodation: Baro Gambela Hotel
Room basis: Full Board

This morning we fly west to Gambella. After lunch visit the cultural market of Gambella, followed by an interesting walk by the Baro River, which joins the White Nile in Sudan, enjoying  some bird watching and the sunset.

Day 3 : Gambela National Park

This morning we drive 48 km to Itang to visit the Nuer people who are cattle keepers and fishermen, and in the afternoon, visit the Agnuak people on the outskirts of the town of Gambella.

Day 4 : Ethiopia

This morning we drive to Bebeka, where the largest coffee plantation is found at, visiting the people of Maji people and the Tepi Tea Plantation on the way.

Day 5 : Ethiopia

Accommodation: Kibish Tented Camp

With a short visit of the Rubber Plantation around Bebeka we then proceed driving farther south to Kibish via Tulgit – the other settlement of the Surma people, finally crossing the Akobo River, which flows to the Baro River. This evening we will camp near Kibish.

Spend the full day today with the Surma people who share the practice of the inserting of clay discs in their lower lips of the women, and the men’s ‘Stick Fighting’, with the Mursi people who live on the other side of the Omo River.

Day 7 : Ethiopia

Drive Mizan Teferi via Bebeka where you will experience the coffee exporting process from nursery to packing and transporting.

Day 8 : Oromia

Accommodation: Central Jimma Hotel
Room basis: Full Board

Today we have an excursion to see the Chat, a mild stimulant cultivation. Visit the Muslim Oromo people on the way as we drive to Jimma – which was the regional capital of Ethiopia in the late 19th Century.

Day 9 : Arba Minch

After breakfast we drive with a stop at Gojeb River where you may spot hippos. On your way visit the people of Wolita who are known for their cultivation of Enset of False Banana.

Day 10 : Jinka

Today we visit the most colourful multicultural market in the Lower Omo Valley at Key Afer – which is attended by the tribal groups of Ari, Benna, and Tsemai,

Today enjoy an excursion to the Mago National Park. Continue to drive to a Mursi village to experience the attractive culture of Mursi tribe. They are renowned for the strange custom followed by their women, who on reaching maturity have their lower lips slit and circular disks inserted.

Later drive back to Jinka and visit the Cultural Museum of the People of the Lower Omo Valley.

Day 12 : Turmi

Today drive to Turmi, the settlement of the Hamer people. The women of the Hamer are known for their adorned thick plaits of ochre coloured hair hanging down in a heavy fringe, their leather skirts decorated with cowries and a dozen or more copper bracelets fixed tightly around their arms. The men are known for the initiation ceremony of ‘Jumping over the Bulls’ and witnessing this interesting ritual is entirely a matter of chance.

Day 13 : Turmi

This morning we will head for an excursion to Omo Rate to visit the Dasenech people who are the southernmost people of the country and are known for their scarifications....

Day 14 : Arba Minch

Accommodation: Paradise Lodge

With an early start, we drive north to Arba Minch with a stop at Lake Chamo for a boat trip to visit the ‘Crocodile Market’ where you can see big African Crocodiles, hippos, and various low land water birds.

Day 15 : Lake Langano

Room basis: Full Board

Drive north to the Rift Valley Lake of Langano visiting the people of Dorze who are known for their huge bamboo huts and colourful cotton clothes. You will also visit the chains of Rift Valley Lakes on your way.

We drive back to Addis after breakfast, arriving after lunch where we have a short city tour of Addis to visit the National Archeological Museum of Addis Ababa and the Merkato, the largest open air market in Africa....
