Along the way, the landscape gradually transforms into the vast savannahs that define Amboseli—an expanse of golden grasslands framed by acacia trees and the dramatic silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro on the horizon.

Arriving at Amboseli, we enjoy a short game drive en route to our lodge, offering the first glimpse of the park’s legendary wildlife. Amboseli is world-renowned for its large herds of elephants, including some of Africa’s last remaining “tuskers,” whose immense ivory tusks sweep close to the ground. Have your travel documents ready for a smooth transition as we complete immigration formalities before continuing our journey. Once across the border, we skirt the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, whose snow-capped summit often gleams above the clouds. We pause to stretch our legs and take a short walk in the foothills, breathing in the crisp mountain air and enjoying wonderful photographic opportunities of this legendary landscape.

Back on the road, we continue toward Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital, travelling through colourful roadside villages and bustling markets that offer a vivid glimpse into daily Tanzanian life. Along the way, admire the contrasting silhouettes of Mount Kilimanjaro on one side and Mount Meru on the other—two of East Africa’s most iconic peaks.

Arriving at Forest Hill Hotel in the late afternoon, settle into your comfortable accommodation surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. After breakfast, we bid farewell to the Drifters truck and transfer into specialised 4×4 safari vehicles purpose-built for the rugged terrain of northern Tanzania. These vehicles are designed for comfort and exceptional game viewing, featuring elevated seating, large windows, and pop-up roofs that provide unobstructed views of the landscapes and wildlife. With bags loaded and cameras ready, we set off toward the world-famous Serengeti National Park.

Our journey takes us through the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a region of rolling volcanic highlands and sweeping grasslands where Maasai herders and wildlife coexist. The drive itself is part of the adventure, offering ever-changing vistas and occasional sightings of wildlife even before entering the park.

Rise early this morning for one of the most unforgettable experiences of the journey—a descent into the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater. After breakfast, we set out toward the Crater rim before making our way down the steep escarpment into this UNESCO World Heritage Site, often referred to as Africa’s “Garden of Eden.” Enclosed by towering walls, the Crater floor is a haven for wildlife, its grasslands, forests, and lakes supporting an incredible density of animals. As we traverse this natural amphitheatre, keep an eye out for black rhinos grazing in the distance, large prides of lions basking in the sun, elephants wandering through the forests, and countless other species including zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, and a vibrant array of birdlife.

After an exciting morning of game viewing, we ascend from the Crater and continue our journey toward Lake Eyasi, a remote soda lake surrounded by arid terrain and scattered villages. The landscape shifts noticeably—lush grasslands giving way to dusty plains and hardy acacia trees. Here, we engage in casual cultural encounters with two of the region’s most fascinating tribes: the Datoga, known for their traditional metalwork and pastoral way of life, and the Hadzabe, one of Africa’s last remaining hunter-gatherer communities. These encounters offer a rare and respectful glimpse into their daily lives, customs, and deep connection to the land.

By late afternoon, arrive at Pamoja Olea Farm Lodge, a welcoming retreat set amid scenic farmland. After a hearty breakfast, we bid farewell to the lodge and begin our journey back toward Nairobi, retracing our route through northern Tanzania. Travelling via Arusha, we’ll make a stop at Arusha Airport to drop off any travellers departing from there before saying goodbye to our reliable Land Cruiser vehicles and rejoining the Drifters overland truck for the final leg of our adventure.

The drive takes us past the slopes of Mount Meru, whose forested peak rises dramatically above the surrounding plains, before continuing toward the Namanga border post. After completing the necessary border formalities, we re-enter Kenya and continue north through the scenic countryside toward Nairobi. Along the way, there’s time to reflect on the unforgettable landscapes, wildlife encounters, and cultural experiences that have defined our East African journey.

By late afternoon or early evening, we arrive in Nairobi, where the tour concludes at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
