Situated in northwest Ethiopia, Debre Markos, also known as Menkorar, is a historic and atmospheric city in the scenic Amhara region. Visitors can look forward to an authentic Ethiopian experience here, where not much has changed over the years and many still abide by a slow-paced, traditional way of life. There are several fascinating attractions to explore, including the historic Church of Markos (the city's namesake), which houses a collection of paintings and artefacts, among others. Nature lovers will relish the opportunity to hike, camp, and photograph their way through the popular Simien Mountains National Park – home to what is considered to be one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world. Debre Markos serves as an excellent stopover for those travelling between Addis and Bahir Dar, as well as a great base from which to explore the surrounding natural beauty.
